PET CT Imaging
PET-CT imaging is a procedure, which is a combination of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT) scans that creates a single set of detailed images. The PET scan shows metabolic activity in the body, while the CT scan provides precise anatomical detail, thus allowing the identification of the location of metabolic activity. This combined technique is used to help diagnose and monitor diseases, particularly cancer, neurological disorders, and cardiovascular conditions.
Thus PET-CT imaging combines two types of imaging, the PET scan uses a radioactive “tracer” to highlight areas of high metabolic activity, while the CT scan uses X-rays to show the detailed structure of bones, tissues, and organs. Thereby, by merging the two scans, doctors get a complete picture of both the function (PET) and the structure (CT) of the body, which helps diagnose diseases more accurately.
